Should God’s people be involved in politics? Ask Abraham, who went to war to rescue his nephew, and was met by kings afterward.
Ask Moses, whom God sent to tell Pharaoh, “Let my people go!” and to lead over two million Israelite slaves to freedom. (Exodus 3:1ff)
Ask Joshua, whom God gave “Jericho, its king, and all its strong warriors.” (Joshua 5:13-6:27)
And the list goes on, of Deborah, Gideon, Samuel, Samson, David, Solomon, and many more of God’s people – all the way through to the New Testament. John the Baptist confronted King Herod. Jesus spoke to the religious leaders, who were also civic leaders, and before Herod and Pilate. James created such a stir that Herod had him killed and then imprisoned Peter. Paul spoke before kings, and John became a political prisoner on the island of Patmos.
As citizens of God’s kingdom and ambassadors for Christ, we represent the kingdom of God before the civic leaders in this world. Now, more than ever, God’s people need to rise up and speak for God in the political arena. In the constitutional representative republic of the United States of America, the very least we must do is vote for those we believe will represent our biblical values. After all, governmental affairs affect our everyday lives.
I recently wrote an article that was published in GO! Christian Magazine about voting for biblical values. You can download it here.
